Farming, Learning, and Inspiring: Koskenojan Tila Oy Bridges Agriculture and Education

On September 24th, the Climate Farm Demo Annual Meeting continued with a visit to Koskenoja Farm in Kurikka, South Ostrobothnia - a modern dairy farm that perfectly combines innovation in climate-smart production with a strong commitment to agricultural education and community engagement.

A Modern Dairy Farm with a Broader Mission

Owned and managed by Juha and Liisa Vuorela, Koskenojan Tila Oy operates 350 hectares of arable land and houses 210 milking cows and around 370 animals in total. The farm uses four milking robots and mixed feed to ensure efficiency and animal welfare, while also cultivating pastures, forage grasses, oats, and barley for feed and sale.

The farm employs six people and runs as a family business rooted in cooperation and knowledge sharing. However, what truly distinguishes Koskenoya Farm is its dual mission: to produce sustainably while educating the public and promoting a positive image of farming.

From Classroom to Countryside

Before joining the farm full-time, Liisa Vuorela worked as a teacher. Today, she brings that same passion for learning to agriculture – transforming her farm into a place of discovery and dialogue. Through workshops, social media channels, and collaborations with schools and universities, Liisa creates connections between rural and urban communities.

One of her YouTube videos was even used in a University of Helsinki lecture, proving how effective storytelling can inspire a wider audience.

“For me, farming is more than producing food – it’s about teaching, connecting, and showing how much care and science go into every glass of milk,”
said Liisa Vuorela, farmer and educator at Koskenoya Farm.

Climate Action Rooted in Precision

The demo event guided visitors through the farm’s Adaptation & Mitigation Plan (AMP), housing facilities, manure management system, and crop production practices. Participants saw how precision farming helps optimize fertilization and improve soil health, while light tillage, cover crops, and drought-resistant grass varieties strengthen the farm’s resilience to extreme weather.

To counter the effects of heat stress, the Vuorelas installed cooling fans in the barn in 2024, a practical adaptation measure already showing benefits in animal comfort and productivity.

With emissions of 1.02 kg CO₂e per litre of corrected milk and 0.1 kg CO₂e sequestered, the farm continues to make measurable progress on its sustainability journey.

Reflection and Knowledge Sharing

The farm demo concluded with a reflection session where participants discussed how the integration of education, communication, and climate-smart farming can accelerate the wider adoption of sustainable practices. Liisa’s active presence on Facebook and YouTube inspired many to rethink how farmers can become powerful ambassadors for climate action.

“Liisa’s approach is truly inspiring – she’s not only a skilled farmer but also an educator who turns her farm into a living classroom. By integrating technology like milking robots and embracing AI as the future of farming, she teaches both children and adults what modern, intelligent agriculture looks like. It’s a model that blends education, innovation, and business in a way that could truly inspire farms across Europe.”

Koskenoya Farm demonstrates that modern farming is not only about efficiency and productivity – it’s also about engaging society, inspiring the next generation, and leading with openness and passion.
