Summary for Practicioners on the Main Finding(s)/Innovative solution(s)
In terms of the number of farms, beef cattle farming is the third-largest production system within the Climate Farm Demo (CFD) network, accounting for 14% of all Pilot Demo Farms (PDFs). It covers 22 of the 26 participating countries. Within this specific production system, the
distribution reflects solely the internal representation of the PDFs within the CFD network.
Within the network of beef cattle farms, 94 different adaptation and mitigation measures have been selected and are currently being implemented on the farms.
From a strategic perspective, the PDF network for beef cattle is primarily focused on mitigation, starting with energy production from renewable sources through the installation of photovoltaic panels and the optimization of raw protein intake.
Livestock and feed management is crucial. Improving animal health, building up safety stocks of forage, managing rotational grazing and reducing the number of unproductive animals are the most selected measures, as they directly reduce enteric emissions and the carbon footprint per kilogram of meat produced.
Installing a solar panel system provides protection against volatile energy costs, whilst building up safety stocks of fodder ensures business continuity in the face of droughts and climatic variability.
Farmers are encouraged to use these findings as a starting point for evaluating solutions suited to their own context. Agricultural advisers could incorporate these suggestions into their advisory services to assess, on a case-by-case basis, how to improve farm efficiency.
As is the case in other production systems, the choice of measures is closely linked to the characteristics of the local production system.
Summary for Practicioners in Native Language
Additional Information
As with other production systems, measure selection on beef cattle farms is closely linked to the intrinsic characteristics of each country’s production system, resulting in a non-uniform geographical distribution of measures.
While solar energy production is widely distributed across the different countries, maybe because of incentives, the optimization of crude protein intake is mainly adopted in Spain. Improving animal health status was mainly selected in UK while Planting hedges was mainly selected in France, Germany and Italy.
The description provided with this practice abstract captures the interests and needs of the farmers. It is useful to guide stakeholders to identify priorities for attention, resource allocation, and future research.
The complete analysis of the measures for the arable crops sector will be available in Climate Farm Demo Deliverable 2.1.
