Summary for Practicioners on the Main Finding(s)/Innovative solution(s)
As part of its analysis of rewarding mechanisms, Climate Farm Demo examined agricultural insurance as a potential tool for supporting climate adaptation and encouraging climate-smart farming practices. Unlike direct financial rewards, insurance primarily helps farmers manage financial losses caused by climate-related risks, such as droughts, floods and extreme weather events.
The analysis explored how insurance could potentially reward farmers who adopt practices that reduce their vulnerability to climate-related risks, including improved soil management, crop diversification and better water retention. Where insurers recognise these practices as reducing insured risks, they may offer incentives such as lower insurance premiums. However, insurance products specifically rewarding climate-smart practices remain limited in Europe, and implementing such incentives requires reliable methods for assessing and verifying risk reductions.
Insurance can complement other rewarding mechanisms by reducing financial uncertainty and supporting farmers’ capacity to invest in adaptation. However, coverage does not eliminate financial risk, and insurance premiums, exclusions and compensation conditions vary between products.
Before purchasing insurance, farmers and advisors should identify the farm’s main climate-related risks and compare available policies. Particular attention should be given to covered events, exclusions, deductibles, premium costs and compensation conditions. Farmers should also check whether implementing climate-smart practices could qualify them for additional benefits or reduced premiums.
