Summary for Practicioners on the Main Finding(s)/Innovative solution(s)
Farms specialising in arable crops account for 21% of the total sample of pilot demonstration farms (PDFs) in the Climate Farm Demo (CFD) project. They are present in 23 of the 26 participating countries, and a quarter of these farms are organic. This distribution ensures broad representativeness across a wide range of climate zones and management systems.
A total of 83 different measures has been included in the AMPs (Adaptation and Mitigation Plans), the majority of which serve the dual purpose of adaptation and mitigation.
The distribution of these measures highlights soil health and carbon sequestration as the first fundamental pillar of sustainable production. Practices such as minimum tillage, cover crops, the incorporation of crop residues and the addition of organic matter aim to increase soil organic carbon and combat erosion.
The integration of legumes and crop diversification improve soil fertility, enabling farms to directly reduce their reliance on synthetic fertilisers, whilst also reducing the number of machineries passes and overall fuel consumption.
Finally, there is the energy transition through the installation of photovoltaic systems.
Farmers are encouraged to use these findings as a starting point for evaluating solutions suited to their own context, considering the experiences of other farms. Advisers could incorporate these suggestions into their consultancy services to assess, on a case-by-case basis, what might improve the company’s efficiency.
As is the case in other production systems, the choice of measures is closely linked to the intrinsic characteristics of the local production system, which results in an uneven geographical distribution of the measures.
Summary for Practicioners in Native Language
Additional Information
As with other production systems, measure selection on arable crop farms is closely linked to the intrinsic characteristics of each country’s production system, resulting in a non-uniform geographical distribution of measures. For example, in Poland the most selected measures are a) the use of varieties adapted to the location and b) no tillage; while in Germany, the most selected measures are linked to the renewable solar energy production both as agro-photovoltaic systems and as renewable energy production. In Spain, measures in arable crops farms are linked mainly to soil management (cultivation of legumes) and fertilisation (use of nitrification inhibitors).
The complete analysis of the measures for the arable crops sector will be available in Climate Farm Demo Deliverable 2.1.
