Summary for Practicioners on the Main Finding(s)/Innovative solution(s)
Dairy cattle farms account for the largest share of the Climate Farm Demo (CFD) network, representing 29% of the total sample. Despite the concentration in Germany, Italy and Ireland, the dairy subnetwork is distributed across most countries, ensuring strong representativeness across a wide diversity of management systems.
The aim of the farmers is to make production as efficient as possible, minimising the waste of resources and maximising efficiency, whilst ensuring the welfare of the dairy cattle.
To achieve these objectives, farmers have identified several best practices which they will implement throughout the duration of the project.
In total, farmers selected 110 different Adaptation and Mitigation Measures (AMMs) and most of them are mitigation measures, strongly focused on animal husbandry and feeding management.
The distribution of these measures highlights herd efficiency and animal longevity as the key areas of focus. Health, longevity and genetics reduce the indirect carbon footprint per kilogramme of milk produced.
This is followed by pasture and feed management, with particular emphasis on rotational grazing and the use of legumes, optimised protein diets and the reduction of synthetic nitrogen, highlighting a structural shift towards internal feed self-sufficiency, improved soil health and the reduction of fertiliser use.
Finally, there is the energy transition through photovoltaic systems.
Farmers are encouraged to use these results as a starting point to evaluate the solutions best suited to their own context, also looking at experiences from neighbouring farms, while advisors should integrate these suggestions into their consulting services to assess, on a case-by-case basis, what can improve farm efficiency
As for other production systems, measure selection in dairy cattle production is closely linked to the intrinsic characteristics of each country’s production system, resulting in a non-uniform geographical distribution of measures.
Summary for Practicioners in Native Language
Additional Information
Dairy farms are not equally distributed across countries. To account for national variations in dairy farm density and evaluate the spatial distribution of climate strategies, measure adoption was calculated relative to the total number of dairy farms in each respective country. The complete analysis of the measures for the dairy production sector will be available in Climate Farm Demo Deliverable 2.1.
The description provided with this practice abstract captures the interests and needs of the farmers. It is useful to guide stakeholders to identify priorities for attention, resource allocation, and future research.
