Summary for Practicioners on the Main Finding(s)/Innovative solution(s)
As part of its analysis of rewarding mechanisms, Climate Farm Demo examined social rewards as non-financial incentives that recognise farmers’ efforts to adopt climate-smart practices. These rewards include peer recognition, increased visibility, opportunities to share expertise and stronger participation in farming communities.
One example analysed by Climate Farm Demo is peer-to-peer recognition through influential farmers. Farmers who demonstrate innovative practices and openly share their experiences can gain recognition among their peers and become trusted sources of practical knowledge. Their experience can encourage other farmers to explore climate-smart practices under comparable farming conditions.
Climate Farm Demo’s own network of Pilot Demo Farmers provides a relevant setting for this approach. By hosting demonstration events and discussing their experiences, farmers have opportunities to share practical knowledge, gain visibility and strengthen professional relationships. Recognition is particularly valuable when farmers can openly discuss not only successful practices but also implementation challenges and lessons learned.
However, social rewards do not replace financial incentives or overcome investment barriers. Their value depends on individual motivation, local social relationships and opportunities for meaningful participation. Recognition may also benefit already-established farmers more than those with limited visibility.
Farmers and advisors should use demonstration events and peer networks to recognise practical experience, facilitate knowledge exchange and involve a diverse range of farmers. Opportunities to host demonstrations, share experiences or mentor others can provide recognition while supporting wider access to practical knowledge.
